Ascent to Grand Paradiso (4.061 m.)

Situated between the Aosta Valley and Piemonte, the Gran Paradiso is the highest alpine peak completely inside the Italian border, within the first National Park of Italy.This national park, famous in Europe due to its high number of resident Stambecchi (Ibex) and immense area allowing the study of wildlife, Flora and Fauna alike. Among the many species of flora in the Park is the Linnea Borealis, which took its origin in the Antartic region, and the Aethionema Thomasianum. The Flora and Fauna of this region is interesting not only to specialists, but to any nature lover, walker or mountaineer who finds himself following the famous stone footpaths constructed as hunting paths for the King to access his hunting lodges. These ancient communication paths disappear into thick forests that slowly climb up through open mountain pastures ,towards the moraines and glacier of Gran Paradiso.

  • Day 1: the group will meet the guide at the refuge Chabod for dinner. Briefing on the next days’ ascent, equipment check and a pleasant relaxing evening in the refuge.
  • Day 2: departure from the Refuge between 4 – 5 am to begin the ascent to the peak of Gran Paradiso at 4061mt. The first hour is along a barely visible footpath, then the first easy steps on a snow covered glacier up to around 3800mt, at which point the conditions change to a mixture of easy rock and snow passages up to the peak itself. The ascent takes between 4 – 6 hours.At the summit is the awarding breathtaking panorama, unique due to it’s central high position.The descent can be made either back down to the same refuge or towards the other side, this takes between 2 - 3 hours.Then after a break at the refuge the descent is completed down to the valley floor.

This is an excursion at high altitude, suitable for those who want to begin to discover high mountain walking and its fantastic scenery. There are no particular technical difficulties, it is obligatory to use crampons, an ice axe and harness. To be able to take part in this excursion it is important to be in good physical shape and a good walker with stamina, as on the second day there is a total of 9 – 10 hours of walking between the ascent and descent.

Weatherproof shoes with the possibility to attach crampons - ice axe – harness – backpack - water bottle – sunglasses - sun protection cream : min. protection factor 8 – anorak - wind jacket – woollen hat - gloves – socks– undervest – long underwear – pullover - change of T shirt – camera – healdlamp.
Harness, crampons and pick axe can be rented directly in the hut– cost about 15/20 euro per day per person.

Group size:
Maximum 4/5 people per mountain guide.

Every day from June to September – weather permitting.
Cost for the up & down to the same side starting from the hut Chabod:
  • 1 person: 450,00 €;
  • 2 people: 240,00 € per person;
  • 3 people: 170,00 € per person;
  • 4 people: 140,00 € per person.

Included in the price:
  • the assistance of an alpine guide;
  • use of equipment for the group (ropes, pitons, karabiners).

Not included in the price:

  • board and lodging;
  • the technical equipment rental (ice axe, harness and crampons – about 15/20 euro per day);
  • transfers.

Cost of refuge: half board about  42/46  Euro per person.
