A trekking around the Mont Blanc massif where we'll enjoy the comfort of travelling accompanied by the mini-bus, so we can hike lightly and go further to the wildest places between France, Italy and Switzerland. Program

PROGRAM OF the wild side of Mont Blanc Sauvage trekking

DAY 1
CHAMONIX - AIGUILLETTE DES HOUCHES

Elevation gain : + 1000 and - 1000 m
Walking time: approximately 6 to 7 hours

The meeting point with your guide is in front of the Chamonix-Mont Blanc SNCF train station at 8.00 a.m. to check your equipment and to introduce the trekking. We will take the mini bus to the starting point for the day. We'll start our first hike along a forest path that opens out onto mineral terrain, offering us a breathtaking view of Mont Blanc, which is right in front of us. The setting for this wild hike will allow us to rub shoulders with the fauna of the Carlaveyron nature reserve and at the summit the pastures are amazing.

DAY 2
COL DE LA FORCLAZ - FENÊTRE D'ARPETTE

Elevation gain: + 1150 m and - 1150 m
Walking time: approximately 6 to 7 hours

On the second day we head for the Trient valley, at the north-eastern end of the Mont Blanc massif in Switzerland. The route starts gently along the glacier path that follows the stream, before heading uphill towards the Fenêtre d'Arpette. Throughout the ascent, you'll enjoy uninterrupted views of the Trient glacier and the peace and quiet of a little-travelled route.

DAY 3
COURMAYEUR - MONT FORTIN

Elevation gain: + 1500 m and - 1500 m
Walking time: around 8 to 9 hours

We're heading to Italy for the next days, and we'll be able to adapt the walks we do depending on the weather. For our first day in Italy, we'll be climbing up to Mont Fortin to admire the south face of Mont Blanc up close in a unique setting. The itinerary will be decided by your guide, who will be able to find the right spot from which to admire the grandeur of Europe's highest peak. The day can be shortened depending on the shape of the group or the weather. The south face of Mont Blanc is often compared to a small Himalaya in the heart of the Alps, adding an exceptional dimension to our adventure.

DAY 4
COURMAYEUR - COL DE MALATRA

Elevation gain: +1350 m and -1350 m
Walking time: around 6 to 7 hours

After a restful night in the valley, we'll head into the Val Ferret near Courmayeur to reach the starting point of our hike, which will take us to the Col de Malatra at an altitude of almost 3,000 m, a little-frequented spot that will allow us to discover a wild valley surrounded by high peaks with magnificent views over the Val d'Aoste and the Mont Blanc Massif.
On the way down, we can stop at the Bonatti refuge for a well-deserved drink after the efforts of this beautiful day.

DAY 5
COURMAYEUR - TESTA BERNARDA or Secret spot

Elevation gain: + 1400 m and - 1400 m
Walking time: around 8 to 9 hours

The final excursion of our Italian tour will take us to Testa Bernarda, a magnificent viewpoint offering uninterrupted views of the Mont Blanc massif on the Italian side, with the majestic Grandes Jorasses in front of us. The climb up to Testa Bernarda is quite demanding. We arrive on a balcony path that allows us to take our time and contemplate the peaks of the Mont Blanc Massif.
On the way down, we'll stop off at the Bertone Refuge for a coffee, before heading back to France via the Mont Blanc tunnel to Chamonix.
End of the trek: we'll drop you off at Chamonix-Mont Blanc train station. And so ends this unforgettable adventure exploring the breathtaking scenery of Mont Blanc!

If you wish, you can of course extend your stay by staying an extra night in Chamonix (see useful information).

Is the Tour of Mont Blanc difficult?

The Tour du Mont Blanc (TMB) is a large-scale tour that can be challenging depending on a number of factors. For a start, it covers around 170km with a cumulative positive elevation gain of around 10,000m. This means long days of walking and lots of ascents and descents.
The difficulty of the TMB is also linked to the length of the trek. On average, you'll need between 7 and 10 days to complete a full tour of the massif. This means you'll be walking for 6 to 8 hours a day, which can be demanding if you're not used to such treks.

It's important to note that some sections of the TMB are more difficult than others. For example, the Col de la Croix du Bonhomme in France (2443m) and the Grand Col Ferret on the Italian-Swiss border (2537m) require extra concentration.

However, the TMB is considered a relatively accessible trek for sporty people.

When is the best time to do the Tour du Mont Blanc?

The best time to do the Tour du Mont Blanc is generally from mid-June to mid-September. This is when the weather conditions are most favourable and the refuges are open.

  • Mid-June to mid-July: the days are long and the weather is generally good. There is a lot of flowering, which makes the landscape particularly beautiful, but on the high passes there is still a lot of snow, so the route is more technical.
  • Mid-July to mid-August: This is the busiest period. If you're looking for peace and quiet, it's best to avoid this period, but the trails are easier because the snow has disappeared, which makes the route easier and the possibility of doing variants easier.
  • Late August to mid-September: the atmosphere is more relaxed, there are fewer hikers on the trails and the days are generally a little cooler.

It is also possible to do the Mont Blanc tour in autumn, despite the more unpredictable weather and the closure of refuges, by sleeping in hotels in the valley.

What is the most beautiful part of the Tour du Mont Blanc?

The beauty of the Tour du Mont Blanc is subjective and depends on individual preferences. However, some stages stand out for their exceptional scenery.

In France, the Contamines nature reserve offers an unspoilt natural setting with a rich alpine flora. The Col du Bonhomme offers breathtaking views of Mont Blanc. Lac Blanc, nestling in the Aiguilles Rouges reserve, offers a spectacular panorama of the Mont Blanc massif.

In Italy, the Val Vény is famous for its wild landscapes and views of the Grandes Jorasses. The Col de la Seigne pass marks the entrance to the Chamonix valley, with its breathtaking views of the Mont Blanc massif.

In Switzerland, the Grand Col Ferret offers spectacular views of the Italian side of Mont Blanc.

These and other viewpoints are what make the TMB so famous. But each stage has its own charm and natural wonders.
