Beekeeping in French Savoy, how to protect Black Bees

The CETA Savoie has set up a breeding project for Queens of the Black Bee which have been selected within the alpine zone to conserve the genetic heritage of the Alpine Black Bee. This bee species is threatened by crosses due to new species brought from other countries and by many hybridizations that have been made to create more productive and gentler bees.

Natural biodiversity is undermined with the hybridization of indigenous bees and all these new strains, local beekeepers are currently implementing the conservation of the local species as local farmers have safeguarded the local species of cows with the creation of Beaufort AOC.

The action of Esprit Montagne for Black Bees

We start beekeeping with the local black bee which was provided by CETA of Savoy. The beehives are operated by part of the team, they are located in Haute Tarentaise in several small apiaries, the aim of Esprit Montagne is to promote the protection of bees in Europe and in the mountains.

When purchasing Esprit Montagne programs, you can donate a small amount of money to the association "Terre d'Abeille", which works for the protection of bees on a political level in Europe, and to the association "Ekorucher" who works for the development of equipment for mountain beekeeping with professionals from the Southern Alps.

The local bee has adapted for millennia to our climate, it must be protected to prevent the species from disappearing by mixing with others, which are not adapted to our mountain winters.

We want to accompany 20 beehives at the end of summer, in a gentle way to let the bees develop at their own pace and give honey to our best customers.

The contribution to the protection of biodiversity is very important for us, hoping that everyone does this apart like the Hummingbirds and that Man will manage to limit the 6th great mass extinctions which is underway!

The CETA of Savoie

CETA Savoie is an association whose purpose is to safeguard the genetic heritage of the black bee with the alpine ecotype.
Apis mellifera-mellifera "the black bee" is well adapted to our region. Indeed, the black bee is known to be thrifty.
Usually its brood is surrounded by a large strip of provisions and pollen.
We can also cite its qualities of wintering, longevity, flight power, regularity of rays and a laying rate adapted to our long winters, with in the spring a late but rapid start of the colony.
Despite this, under the effect of interbreeding, it is now threatened and Man must help nature to keep its genetics before the interbreeding of bees becomes too strong.

The objectives of CETA Savoie

Research, identify, and qualify the strains of black bees selected to supply its breeding stations in Tarentaise and in the Bauges:

  • Carries out training through queen breeding courses for beekeepers from Savoie and Haute-Savoie.
  • Diffuses black bee queens to trainees and beekeepers to develop colonies from its strains.
  • Participate in exhibitions and events in regional events.

The fertilization apiary of the Encombres valley

To succeed in producing several hundred Reine d'Abeilles Noires to supply local beekeepers, the CETA of Savoie has set up a male apiary to be selected in an isolated mountain valley in Savoie with a large number of Nucleis to carry out breeding. 'about 400 queens last year.

Kelly Duqueine's work

Kelly Duqueine is the Beekeeper who sets up work with the help of many volunteers and members of CETA Savoie.

Her work is different from many beekeepers, her goal is not to produce honey for humans, but to help local beekeepers to conserve the strain of the Black Bee. Since the spring she works to give queens to the Beekeepers starting from June.

She also carries out training for young beekeepers to improve their skills, with the arrival of parasites and new diseases, it is now much more difficult to keep bees, bees die more easily than before!

The importance of safeguarding the black bee

For more than 30 years, several whistleblowers (scientists, environmentalists, naturalists, professional and amateur beekeepers, etc.) have made us aware of the increasing mortality of bees, the disappearance of insects and, on a larger scale, all of the biodiversity.

Few ambitious programs are set up at the political level to change the trend, but in Haute Tarentaise the policies have given the means hoping that they will be followed at the national and international level soon!

The Savoyard black bee conservatory (CETA de Savoie): protection, regeneration and transmission through the safeguarding of the genetics of our endemic bee species in danger of extinction (the only bee species to honey naturally present in our mountains and everywhere in France for more than 1 million years).

Many beekeepers are mobilizing and training in alternative practices in order to preserve a more natural beekeeping by collaborating with the local black bee.

"Getting started in beekeeping that respects the well-being of bees"

How to act to help the local bees to survive in a nature which is degrading and to know the good gestures in order to have a few hives in your home?
This training will give you the essential bases of a healthy and harmonious management of the colonies. Do not hesitate to contact Kelly Duqueine for the next trainings.

They will revolve around different themes:

  • The interest in the preservation and the history of the local bee with a visit to the Maison de l’Abeille Noire & the Nature Center of Les Menuires,
  • Honey plants and pollination,
  • Basic equipment (on Warré and Dadant hives),
  • The fundamentals of sustainable beekeeping,
  • How the life of a colony works,
  • Minimum interventions throughout the year,
  • Health monitoring of bees,
  • Beehive products & their controlled harvest.

Improve your skills in beekeeping that respect the well-being of bees

You have already had a few colonies for several seasons and want to develop your skills in order to support them as naturally as possible and increase the number of your hives!

This training offers you to perfect your practice through methods that allow you to conserve your good local strains and multiply them thanks to the natural instinct of swarming and the local breeding of queens.

Please feel free to contact Kelly Duqueine, the contact can be found further down in the article.
